This may be a ground-breaking book of the time in which it was originally published, and it might be an important book, but frankly, I don't think it aged all that well. Or maybe I just don't really like the 1960s and going back to that time does nothing for me. I'm not sure. I found the characters to be bland, the plot meandering and unengaging. I felt myself wanting to yell at the characters to do something with their lives, not wait around for it to come to them.I suppose this might be interesting to a historian or someone that is making a study of gay literature, but it's not the sort of book I'd sit down with on a Sunday afternoon for sheer enjoyment sake.

The Why Not edition by Victor J Banis Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
A great book.
Written as a series of connected vignettes, my only complaint is I didn't feel the characterizations were strong enough for me to follow who was who, or perhaps there were just too many short ideas. The main point though is the ideas all worked.
Some were happy, some were sad, a fantastic portrait of gay life in the early 1960's, possibly one of the best I've read. Such a wide range of people and ideas presented, it really made you feel like you were there. From drag queens and sex parties to a quiet couple's night in, clashes with the police and the vice squad, married men, single men, it was such a great well-rounded portrait of gay life.
Proof-reading would have been nice. A "fish crashing into his jaw" is less impressive than a "fist crashing into his jaw".
OK - I admit up front I was looking for an easy, fun read and had seen Victor Banis's name floated a few places, did not read the blurb, just saw the "Meh" cover and bought it expecting to spend a few fun-filled hours with my brain turned off. That's not what I got and I'm really glad about it. This is not a lightweight story by any means but fear not about that. Themes that need to be addressed in the real world are interlaced in a really fine story. You will come to care - a lot - about these characters and what happens to them. You will have compassion (or not) for these characters who become people rather quickly. In short, I'd consider this an important work that is also just a flat out good read.
