Having been a fan of Ms. King's works for years, I was delighted to be asked to review the newest book in her line of original works. And, being a veteran of the NaNoWriMo challenge, I am duly impressed by what she's been able to accomplish in a month.

Ms. King's works have always been strong because of her characters, and "To Save a Soul"'s cast is compelling and endearing. The story itself is simple, but touched with the paranormal and laced with intrigue. The writing itself will draw you in, and suggests a nod in the direction of RPGs and D&D narratives.

A definite must-read for any fans of fantasy, adventure, and Ms. King's other works!
I don't usually read books of this genre, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. But I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and visiting the world the author created. The language, the actions of the characters, the descriptions...all were interwoven into an enjoyable tale. I especially liked the the main characters. Para and Mun were fleshed out and flawed...just the kind of characters that keep me interested.

I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.

To Save a Soul was apparently written in a month. That I find an amazing accomplishment, especially considering the quality of the writing. If there were any errors, plot holes, or grammar issues then I skimmed right past them!

The main driver of this story is characterization. And, no, I don't mean whether a person was a ranger or a warrior (I found it highly amusing that the characters referred to themselves like they were playing a Dungeons and Dragons game!). In this case the character is Para Sedi. While she's the main character it's her antics mannerisms that are the main show. Especially since she's quite a talker, accounting for the majority of the text in this 200 page novel, while her partner is the strong and silent type. That's not to say that the other characters were two-dimensional...they are not. It's just that you keep reading to see what Para will say or do next.

That's a very good since not only does Para save a soul she saves the plot. The author attempted to place some uncertainty in the mind of the reader but overall the plot is too straight-forward and simplistic. I kept expecting a surprise or twist but the resolution was forecast early on in the musing suspicions of Para. *SPOILER* The unhappy warrior groom being the murderer was just too obvious. The climax could have been greatly heightened by a bit more misdirection leading to a surprise. Perhaps the maid could have been a secret lover of the groom and thus murderously jealous and envious of the bride-to-be. Her guilt would have made her the ghost we read about. So the groom was covering up both his secret affair and his unholy activities with the arcanist. The activities of Para and crew could have led to open warfare between the two families, with Para racing to find the truth in order to stop the needless bloodshed.*END SPOILER*

I learned that this novel had been written in a month shortly after reading it, so the plot being very simple can be forgiven. Although I should note that "simple" is a relative thing, since as I've noted in past reviews I have a tendency to solve mysteries early on in a story. So the majority of readers should be highly satisfied with this fun fantasy romp.

Now this novel leaves you believing that there will be a sequel. Out of all the books I've reviewed I've enjoyed this one the most, mostly due to my preference for the fantasy genre. Given time to develop a more complex plot I'm sure Nona King could produce a stellar fantasy novel!
