One of the reasons I enjoyed reading this book is that it reminds of the Jessica Fletcher character in the television series I loved watching “Murder, She Wrote.” Regardless of where she went Jessica always seems to have run into a murder of some sort requiring her to use her amateur investigative abilities, especially that of her perseverance and intelligence to help resolve every crime or murder she winds up encountering, even it occurs while on vacation or an event for one of her books.
While Ms. Fletcher is an author of mysteries and murders, Mercy Mares is a nurse, a nurse who desires a little peaceful downtime for the rigors of her profession. So to celebrate her birthday she decides to have a girl’s only escape to a quiet Bed & Breakfast, miles away from home. But knowing her luck, she’s fearful destiny might decide to rear its head and throw a monkey wrench into her plans, with another murder at her feet. This fear is clearly visible as you read the first line of this book:
“Is it too much to ask that no one dies in the middle of dinner during my birthday getaway weekend?”
But unfortunately this desire to have a birthday getaway without any interruptions proved to be short-lived as no sooner did Mercy, her daughter and best friend sit down to enjoy their welcome dinner then one of the unconventional owners of the B & B wound up dying during the meal. Leaving everyone involved in a complicated muddle of whodunits imbedded in chaos.
There are quite a few surprise twists from this point going forwards to keep a reader’s in wanting to read more. Is it possible for this bunch of extremely enthusiastic friends to crack the mystery of the owner’s death before they get involved in any bigger problems?
I found the storyline keeping my interest going until the final resolution had been reach, and the reason for my giving Ms. Mallory and this book 5 STARS.

Along Came A Needle A Mercy Mares Cozy Mystery Book Four eBook Ava Mallory Reviews
Pretty good.
Well I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this book. It took a chapter to figure out who was who, but then it took off like a rocket. Great whodunit story
But of fluff left til the last second to solve. None of the clues line up very well, but still the storey is kinda cute. The best parts are the interaction from people in her 'real' life. Some mysteries going on there as well.
Challenging to complete this book as our main character, Mercy, a retired nurse, complains constantly to her daughter & her best friend. They're treating her to a weekend get-a-way and she is not only not grateful, she wants to go home. Once you get past the constant complaining, it is a nice little cozy mystery. Some parts were unrealistic (so many persons involved in deception) but otherwise enjoyable.
Mercy strikes again! Mercy her best friend and daughter are adventure bound... I mean vacation bound. I typical Mercy fashion, she ends up in yet another perplexing situation. So much for rest and relaxation! We are introduced to new characters, who are exactly that~ characters! Ms. Mallory did an excellent job with just a touch of back story, but this certainly could be read as stand alone. Another wonderful light read mystery in this series. Looking forward to the next installment. 5/5 cross posting to My reading Reality and BAPS book blog
I wanted to like this book, I really did. But, I simply did not enjoy spending time with Mercy.
Mercy and her daughter and her best friend were taking a trip to a bed and breakfast to celebrate Mercy's birthday. She hated the trip, she disliked a man they met at a rest stop, she hated the B&B and she disliked the owners.
The location was interesting, the plot was interesting and the writing was good.
But, in real life I would not spend time with someone who is so miserable, so why would I spend any time with a book with such a miserable lead character.
I didn't finish this novel, primarily due to the fact that the main character was such a grouch! Complaining, mumbling, moaning, objecting... Good grief, if I want to listen to that kind of stuff, all I need to do is hang out with my family, not my novels! The book was well-written and edited; the setting was intriguing, and the rest of the characters well-rounded, but I just could not get past the protagonist's grumpy nature. I like to befriend the characters in the novels I read--or else in all honesty despise them and hope they are going to be the "murderee"--but all I wanted to do with this character was smack her upside the back of the head. Not my idea of a pleasurable read.
