I bought this book ages ago because I love social satire. Last night, I was running a fever so high that I was mildly hallucinating. My head hurt too bad for light to television, and I knew the best thing for me would be to read - but that kind of eye strain wouldn’t happen. I bought this on audible (am I leaving this review in the right place). I listened to it, which calmed the hallucinations. At about 3 am, my fever broke. I laid there in a puddle of my own sweat while Babe argues with Genevieve. Without this, I’d still be writhing in my feverish delirium.Tags : White Girl Problems [Babe Walker] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. White Girl Problems Babe Walker 9781401324544 Books Reviews
This book made me laugh out loud and wish I'd have thought of it all. So many people I know thought this was a legit biography, which made it even funnier. Of course this is not a very cerebral piece of literature, and it's not supposed to be. It's the perfect read for a beach/pool, plane ride, snow day, or even just to take a break from more serious books. Babe Walker is a great bitch of a character, who is sadly probably more realistic than any of us want to admit. Congrats to these creator/authors for making such a ludicrous person so endearing to the reader. I listened to an NPR interview with them, and it made me love the book even more. Every single 17+ girl should read and laugh hysterically at White Girl Problems.
A friend recommended this book a few years ago and every time tried to read it I fell asleep. This time I tried a bit harder and I stayed awake and didn't dislike it, the were some funny parts but some other parts were too predictable that I could kept reading without missing the plot even if skipping those parts. Way too many fillers. Not sure if I would recommend this book.
Only because I love a good book, and this is seriously crap. I couldn't finish reading it because Babe was such a negative, rude and just plain mean character. You have to admire her honesty, but at what cost?! I could never imagine being that type of person myself and can't wrap my head around someone with those thoughts and "actions". I wish I would have never given "Babe Walker" my money.
This book was my vacation read and it is hilarious. There were times when I was annoyed by her stories that were so unrealistic compared to a real person's life but that was not often. Btw I am a black girl and still thought this was hilarious. And if you like this book, you should also read bitter is the new black.
I also plan on reading the follow-on book.
kind of blah... kind of cliche... kind of boring. tossed it to the "don't what to do with it now but not good enough for the book shelf" after 2 chapters. I was hoping to at least get a laugh, a chuckle, maybe even a "I can relate" out if it. All I got out of it was decent shipping and thoughts that it was worth the penny I paid but why does it *have* to cost $3.99 to ship a small used book...? it did come in good condition though and my asian cousin, an 18 year old boy, read a few pages, laughed a LITTLE, and then asked if I could relate. Nope, no I can't.
Babe Walker is a fictional character created in collaboration by three authors. To read the full article from The Daily Beast, google "daily beast babe walker". I tried to post the link here, but edited it out.
When I ordered this book, I thought it was a NON-fiction memoir by a socialite. Oops. The stories became harder and harder to believe, until I did some research and discovered that "Babe Walker" isn't real.
The highlight of the book for me was Babe's alter-ego Babette. Babette is written about in the third person, whereas the rest of the book is written by "Babe" in the first person. Babette is simply the crazy person Babe becomes in a relationship when she falls in love - saying and doing crazy things and being unable to stop herself. She is crazy passive aggressive, usually via text message. Babette also dresses horribly, in contrast to Babe's impeccable fashion sense.
I think I would have enjoyed this book more if I had known from the get-go that Babe Walker wasn't real. It's hard to tell from the cover! Babe is the author and there is a photo of her (well, the back of her head) on the back cover.
PS This book is a fast read.
I had this book and Audible version on my for about a year before I decided to read it while on vacation. It stared off hilarious, so much so that I actually laughed out loud for several minutes at a time. I was super excited to keep reading until I got about one-third of the way through.
Then it got boring and predictable. I found myself getting annoyed by Walker's personality, especially when she starts listing recipes for smoothies and her eating disorder-esque snacks. Towards the end, I realized the story could have been structured in a way that would have made more sense with the intro of therapy in the beginning, but it still wouldn't have helped much.
If you're looking for something crappy and easy to read, this is a good choice. It's more entertaining to listen to, so get the audiobook if you can.
